Colonels Clobber Jackson State in Series Finale, 18-2

Final Stats JACKSON, Miss. – The Nicholls State University baseball team cranked out a season-high 19 hits and blew open the game with a seven-run fourth en route to an 18-2 drubbing of Jackson State Sunday at Bob Braddy Field.

The Colonels climb back to .500 with the win (6-6) and take the four-game series versus Jackson State (6-5), three games to one.

Senior Tyler Duplantis led Nicholls at the plate, going 4-for-6 with four runs scored. David Zorn added three hits, as did Keith Cormier. Leo Vargas was one of three Colonels to record two hits, and he also belted his first home run of the season, a two-run shot which started the Colonels' big fourth inning.

Already with a 5-1 lead, the Colonels had five hits in the frame and were helped by four Tiger errors. Brandon Jackson had a RBI single in the inning, Christian Correa drove in a run on a sacrifice fly and Zorn doubled home Charles Morton. The Colonels' other two runs came across the plate on errors.

After plating two more runs to lead 14-2, Darius Knight cleared the bases in the ninth with a three-run double. Correa added a RBI single to make the final. Correa and Zorn joined Knight with three RBIs each.

Grant Borne (1-1) picked up the win for the Colonels, allowing two runs (one earned) in six innings of work. Borne gave up five hits and struck out nine. Cole Stapler pitched the final three innings, surrendering just one hit.

Nicholls will return to Thibodaux to take on Sacred Heart on Tuesday, March 4. First pitch at Ray E. Didier Field is scheduled for 6 p.m.
