Colonels to Face Lamar in Three-Game Weekend Series on the Road

BEAUMONT, Texas – After falling to No. 5 Louisiana-Lafayette in a two-game home-and-home series, the Nicholls State University baseball team takes to the road looking to bounce back against Southland Conference opponent, Lamar University.

The series will begin on Friday in Beaumont, Texas with first pitch slated for 6:30 p.m.  The Colonels (10-12, 2-1) and Cardinals (14-8, 1-2) will then play at 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday to round out the series.  Friday's game will be broadcast on KNSU 91.5 FM while Saturday and Sunday's games can be found on KTIB 640 AM.

The Colonels are coming off a series in which they held their own against the high-powered Ragin' Cajun offense that entered the series as one of the best in the country.  The Cajuns (19-2) had scored 39 runs in their previous three games heading into the series, but were held to an average of only six runs against the Colonels.  Nicholls' strong pitching did not allow a home run in the series from the Cajuns who entered with 18 on the season.

Redshirt junior David Zorn led the Colonels at the plate with three hits and a run scored, carrying a .375 (3-for-8) batting average over the series with the Cajuns. The Colonels carry a .231 batting average into the weekend series, lead by Philip Lyons with a .292 batter average.  Tyler Duplantis and Marc Frazier lead the team in RBIs with 15 each.

Taking the mound for the Colonels against Lamar will be lefty Taylor Byrd (3-1, 1.07 ERA) on Friday night, lefty Grant Borne (3-1, 3.38 ERA) on Saturday, and right-hander Brandon Jackson (1-1, 1.89 ERA) on Sunday.  Byrd has been the Colonels Friday night pitcher so far this season and has only allowed just three earned run in his last two games (15 innings.)  Borne will look to continue his hot streak after taking wins at Jackson State, BYU, and Houston Baptist consecutively.  Jackson is coming off a no-decision against Louisiana-Lafayette after pitching two scoreless innings.

The Cardinals are coming off of a 4-2 win against No. 21 University of Houston on Tuesday, rallying from a 2-0 deficit to take the win.

Lamar posts a .284 batting average, led by Kevin Santana with a .376 average.  Jude Vidrine and Brandon Provost lead the team in RBIs with 14 each.

The pitching unit for Lamar holds a 3.12 ERA with 141 strikeouts and 69 earned runs.  Probable starters for the Cardinals are Will Hibbs (2-0, 1.86 ERA) and Chase Angelle (1-3, 3.24 ERA.)

Following the series against Lamar, the Colonels will continue their road swing, traveling to Mobile, Ala. to face South Alabama in a single-game non-conference matchup on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
