Steady pitching and an offensive outburst lead Colonels to victory
Final Stats BEAUMONT, Texas – Steady pitching and an offensive outburst for the Nicholls State University baseball team was the winning formula as the Colonels (11-12, 3-1) blanked Southland Conference opponent, Lamar University, 4-0.
The Colonels got on the board first in the second inning when redshirt junior
David Zorn had a sacrifice fly to left field, driving in junior
Charles Morton. Nicholls added another run in the third inning after redshirt sophomore
Marc Frazier doubled to left field, bringing in senior
Keith Cormier. The Colonels would score again in the seventh when Cormier singled down the right field line and scored senior
Philip Lyons to bring the score to 3-0. Nicholls would continue to build on their lead in the eighth inning as Zorn recorded his second RBI, singling up the middle to drive in senior
Brandon Jackson.
Cormier led the Colonels at the plate, going 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Senior
Leo Vargas went 2-for-4 while Zorn notched a hit with two RBIs.
The Cardinals (14-9, 1-3) were led at the plate by junior Kyle Markum, who was 2-for-3 on the night.
Lefty starter,
Taylor Byrd (4-1), recorded the win, leading the Colonels on the mound for six innings, allowing only six hits with three strikeouts. Redshirt junior
John Satriano followed Byrd on the hill, completely stifling the bats of the Cardinals, allowing no hits and fanning two in two innings. Lefty junior
Stuart Holmes closed out the game, throwing the final inning with two strikeouts.
Right-handed sophomore, Will Hibbs (2-1), took the loss, pitching the first seven innings for the Cardinals, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits. Senior Hunter Perry took over for Hibbs, pitching one inning while surrendering one run on two hits. Junior Zach Aitken threw the final frame for Lamar, keeping the Colonel bats at bay.
