Christian Correa had a walk-off single to lead the Colonels passed ORU 2-1
Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team defeated Oral Roberts 2-1 in walk-off fashion, taking the series 2-1 while retaining sole possession of the top spot in the Southland Conference.
It was a battle of right-handers as
Brandon Jackson and Gavin Glanz fought throw by throw through the first eight innings, allowing just one run each. Oral Roberts (12-14, 3-6 SLC) would take the early lead for the third time in three games after Jose Trevino singled up the middle to drive in Logan Domenico in the first inning. Nicholls (15-14, 7-2 SLC) would answer in the third when Cormier ground out to third base, allowing
Philip Lyons to come home and tie the game 1-1.
Alex Tucker got the start behind the plate, but after a substitution in the eighth inning,
Christian Correa took over catching responsibilities. It was a defensive move that would have a major offensive impact on the game.
In the ninth inning with two outs
Tyler Duplantis singled to center field, followed by a
David Zorn walk. With two on and two outs, Correa made his way to home plate with the winning run on second. According to the scouting report, Correa was exactly who the Golden Eagles would want at the plate, posting a .167 batting average and only 12 hits coming into the ballgame. But on his first at bat of the day, with the game on his shoulders, Correa lined a shot to leftfield over the head of third baseman Brandon Healy, driving in Duplantis for the 2-1 win as the Colonels stormed the field.
Jackson carried the Colonels defensively, surrendering only one run on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts through eight innings.
John Satriano (1-0) recorded the win, throwing the final frame while allowing no hits and no runs.
Glanz kept the Colonels at bay through eight innings, surrendering one run on four hits with three walks and fanning six. Pepe Gomez (2-3) took the loss in relief, throwing 2/3 innings with one earned run on two hits.
Correa had the play of the day, going 1-for-1 with a hit and an RBI.
Leo Vargas led the Colonels in hits; going 2-for-4, while both Lyons and Duplantis registered a hit and a run scored.
Anthony Sequeira, who was 2-for-3 on the day, led the Golden Eagles at the plate. Trevino was 1-for-4 and registered Oral Roberts' only RBI.
