THIBODAUX, La. –  The Nicholls State University women's tennis team saw its five-match winning streak come to an end, falling 4-3 to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Sunday afternoon at the Colonel Tennis Complex.

The Colonels drop to 10-5 overall and 4-2 in the Southland Conference while the Islanders improve to 11-4 and 5-1.

Nicholls claimed the doubles points, rebounding from a loss on the No. 2 court to take a 1-0 lead. Stephanie Barnett and Isla Brock needed a tiebreaker to defeat Sandra Burges/ Judit Vives, winning 7-3 for a one-point win. On the No. 3 court, Marie Aubert and Kateryna Nakonechna claimed the point with an 8-5 win over Stefania Nicolae/ Kerry Galhous.

Galhous made quick work of Emma Kranendonk on the No. 6 court, 6-1, 6-2, to even the match at 1-1. Barnett gave the Colonels back the lead, defeating Maider Martin 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2. Brock then put Nicholls up 3-1 with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Burges on the No. 5 court. Brock leads Nicholls with an 11-1 record in singles, and Barnett improved to 10-3.

Needing one more point to clinch the match, the Colonels came up empty the rest of the way as the Islanders swept the final three matches. Nakonechna lost in straight sets at No. 4, and Aubert fell 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 against Nicolae to even the score at 3-3. In the No. 3 match, Klara Skopac won the first set over Vives, 7-6 (8-6), but Vives came back to win the second set, 6-2, before winning 6-3 to secure the team victory.

The Colonels return to the courts next Saturday at Abilene Christian. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m.
