Colonels Welcome BYU for Four-Game Series

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team will continue its stretch of 15 home games in 30 days as the Colonels take on the BYU Cougars in a four-game set at Ray E. Didier Field, starting Thursday night at 6 p.m.

Nicholls (6-6) and BYU (5-8) will play a doubleheader on Friday at 3 p.m. before closing out the series on Saturday night at 6 p.m. KNSU 91.5 FM will broadcast Friday's second game, with the other three contests will air live on KTIB 640 AM. All four games will have a video stream available on Colonels All-Access.

Thursday night's contest will feature an 80's theme as the Colonels will honor the 1984 and '89 teams throughout the weekend. All fans are encouraged to wear 80's attire for Thursday's game, and also, an 80's themed alumni tailgate is scheduled for 4-5:30 p.m. in the right field corner of the stadium. Nicholls heads into the series after taking three of four against Jackson State in a home-and-home series. The Colonels closed out the series with a dominating 18-2 win on Sunday as they pounded out 19 hits, their most since recording 22 at McNeese State on May 20, 2010. Senior Tyler Duplantis led the way with four hits on the day, and Keith Cormier and David Zorn had three each.

Leo Vargas and Zorn lead the Colonels is hitting with .295 and .290 averages, respectively. Philip Lyons has a team-high 14 hits, nine RBIs and leads the team in stolen bases (5). As a team, Nicholls is batting .226 while the pitching staff is holding the opposition to a .218 average.

Scheduled to make starts on the mound in the series for the Colonels are Brandon Jackson (1-0, 0.82 ERA/ Game 1), Ryan Deemes (1-1, 2.08 ERA/ Game 2), Taylor Byrd (1-1, 0.48 ERA/ Game 3) and Grant Borne (1-1, 4.26 ERA/ Game 4). Byrd heads the staff with 24 strikeouts in 18.2 innings pitched. Jackson and Stuart Holmes have fanned 12 each, followed by Borne (11) and closer Marc Picciola (10).

BYU comes to Thibodaux on a four-game winning streak, capped by a 20-3 blowout of Utah on Tuesday. The Cougars post a .301 team batting average, led by outfielder Eric Urry (.394). Against Utah, Kelton Caldwell had three hits, including two triples, to extend his hitting streak to seven games. Caldwell (.322) is one of seven Cougars batting .300 or better and he leads the team with 11 RBIs.

BYU will send out righties Kolton Mahoney (1-2, 3.15 ERA), Jeff Barker (1-2, 4.71 ERA) and Desmond Poulson (3-0, 2.25 ERA) for games 1, 2 and 4, respectively, with Friday's second-game starter to be determined. As a staff, the Cougars have a 4.59 ERA and 69 strikeouts. Poulson leads the team with 16 punchouts in 24 innings of work while Mahoney has held opponents to a team-best .169 batting average.

The series will be the first meeting between the schools.
