KK Babin who had 12 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds, as the Colonels hung on for a 73-69 victory over Houston Baptist on Thursday night at Sharp Gym.
Nicholls (16-12, 11-6) led by 14 with 11 minutes to go, but Houston Baptist (11-17, 7-10) stormed back and eventually took the lead at the 1:53 mark on jumper by Shanice Steenholdt, who had 22 points and 14 rebounds for the Huskies. But the HBU advantage was short lived as Babin recorded her 10th assist when freshman
Taylor Morrison drained a 3-pointer to put Nicholls up 70-68 with 98 seconds remaining.
A Steenholdt free throw cut the deficit to one point, but Houston native
Jenny Nash made two free throws to push the lead back to three with 24 ticks left. After a missed 3-pointer by HBU, Scott tacked on one more from the charity stripe in the waning seconds to make the final.
Nash was the only other Colonel in double figures with 13 points, and nine came in the first half off of three 3-pointers.
JonMarie Guillory had a big game off the bench with nine points, Morrison had eight, and Scott and
Shay Arnick chipped in with seven each.
The Colonels shot 47 percent for the game, helped by a 50-percent effort in the first half. HBU came out of the gates with a hot hand to lead 12-5, but a lengthy 21-2 run before the break helped Nicholls head into the intermission with a 35-28 lead.
Nicholls had 21 turnovers and tied the Huskies in rebounding at 38-38. Nicholls held HBU to 34 percent shooting and 3-of-19 from behind the arc.
The Colonels will close out the regular season on Saturday, March 8, at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Tipoff against the Islanders is scheduled for 12 p.m.
