Nicholls won its 10th game in conference this season after defeating HBU Thursday night
HOUSTON – The Nicholls State University men's basketball team had four players score in double figures, led by seniors
Jeremy Smith and
Dantrell Thomas who combined for 30 points, as the Colonels earned a season-sweep of Southland newcomer Houston Baptist with a 75-62 victory Thursday night at Sharp Gym.
With the win, Nicholls improves to 13-13 on the year and 10-6 in the Southland. The 10 conference wins are the most for the Colonels since the 2008-09 season when they finished 12-4.
Nicholls shot 50 percent for the game, and trailed only once at 2-0. The Colonels were red-hot in the first half, making 15-of-26 from the field to lead 34-26 at the break. Smith, who led Nicholls with 17 points, had 12 in the first half, missing only one time in six attempts. The New Orleans native finished the game 7-of-11 from the field and added four rebounds and three assists.
Thomas scored 13 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
T.J. Carpenter scored 13 as well, and Shane Rilleux scored 11 points after missing the last games with an injury. Off the bench,
Ja'Dante' Frye paced Nicholls with six points and four rebounds.
Nicholls wraps up the season at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday. Tipoff at the American Bank Center is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
