Nicholls will look to earn a season split against the Islanders
THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University men's basketball team wraps up its 2013-14 regular season looking to avenge an earlier loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as the Colonels take on the Islanders Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the American Bank Center.
The contest will be broadcast on ESPN 100.3 FM and KLEB 1600 AM, with pregame coverage scheduled to start 15 minutes prior to tipoff.
Nicholls earned a season sweep of Houston Baptist with a 75-62 victory on Thursday night and in doing so, climbed back to .500 on the season (13-13, 10-7). The Colonels have already punched their ticket to the Southland Conference Tournament for the sixth-straight year, but their seed is still yet to be determined. With a win, Nicholls would finish at No. 5, and a loss could drop them to No. 6.
The senior duo of
Dantrell Thomas and
Jeremy Smith continue to lead the Colonels on offense, averaging 15.7 and 14 points, respectively. Smith has been on a shooting terror as of late, climbing up to 24th in the nation in field goal percentage at 57.2 percent. In the win over HBU, Smith had a team-high 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting, while Thomas scored 13.
The Islanders (16-14, 13-4) have won six in a row, moving all up to the No. 2 seed. Four of the Islanders' wins during the stretch have come by double figures including a 67-51 win over McNeese. Before their run, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi topped the Colonels 70-67 on Jan. 18.
John Jordan leads A&M-Corpus Christi in scoring, averaging 15.2 points per game. In the win over the Cowboys, Jordan was one of three Islanders in double figures, finishing with 10 points.
