Dantrell Thomas scored 14 points in the Colonels' regular season finale
Final Stats CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Nicholls State University men's basketball team was held to its lowest point total of the season as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi defeated the Colonels 58-44 in the teams' regular season finale Saturday at American Bank Center.
With the loss, Nicholls ends the regular season with a 13-14 overall record and 10-8 in Southland. The Colonels will enter next week's Southland Conference Tournament as the No. 5 seed and will play No. 8 Southeastern Louisiana on Thursday at 5 p.m.
Nicholls made only 16 field goals in the loss, with four coming in the first half. The Colonels shot 17 percent in the opening period and trailed 19-11 at the break. The Islanders (17-14, 14-4) made 65 percent of their shots from the field, missing only six times in the second half (16-of-22).
Dantrell Thomas led Nicholls with 14 points and
Jeremy Smith added 10.
Shane Rillieux and
Luke Doyle were the next leading scorers, each finishing with six points.
Thomas started the game with a 3-pointer, but Nicholls went through a 10-minute stretch without scoring a point. Despite the drought, the Colonels were only down 16-5 with eight minutes remaining until the intermission.
Sam McBeath made a 3-pointer to score the final points of the half, bringing the score to 19-11 at the 3:24 mark.
In the second half, the Islanders outscored Nicholls 9-2 in the first five minutes, and then extended their advantage to 35-15 after a dunk by Joy Williamson, who finished with 10 points. The Colonels never came closer than 14 the rest of the way as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi swept the season series.
Ali Hameed led Corpus-Christi with 12 points, and John Jordan added six points and seven assists.
