Jaguars Edge Colonels 5-2

Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team could not overcome four defensive errors and efficient offensive play from Southern University, falling 5-2 on Tuesday night at Ray E. Didier Field.

Southern (5-16) carried a seven game losing streak into the game and had been swept by Prairie View A&M in its most recent series. On the season, the Jaguars had lost eight games in which they were tied or leading, but traded their late-inning woes for late-inning heroics against the Colonels.

Nicholls took an early lead on a double to left field from Justin Smith that drove in Leo Vargas.

In the fifth frame, Marcus Tomlin walked and Jose DeLaTorre singled before Harley Wiltz was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for Southern. Robinson Mateo was subsequently walked, tying the game.

Nicholls regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Philip Lyons scored on a ground out by Keith Cormier.

Southern would retie the game in the sixth inning after Tomlin grounded out, scoring Phillip Williams. Two errors and two walks in the top of the seventh allowed the Jaguars to score two additional runs. Southern would add one final run in the ninth on a passed ball, on route to a 5-2 victory over the Colonels.

Ryan Deemes started on the hill for Nicholls, throwing four scoreless innings and fanning two. Cole Stapler (1-1) took the loss, throwing 1 1/3 innings and allowing two earned runs on two hits with four walks and a strikeout.

Conner Baumgardner (2-1) earned the win for the Jaguars, tossing four innings while surrendering one run on three hits with two strikeouts. Rafeal Diaz claimed his third save of the year, pitching the final frame, fanning two with no hits and no runs.

It was a tough offensive night for the Colonels who hit .142 as a team.  Lyons led at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored. Justin Smith contributed a hit and an RBI.

Southern was led offensively by Brian Rowry who went 2-for-4, chipping in a run and a walk. Gavin Webster also added two hits.

The Colonels will travel to Monroe on Wednesday to face ULM (11-7), before taking on Southland Conference opponent, Northwestern in Natchitoches this weekend. Wednesday's game will be broadcast on KNSU 91.5 FM.
