TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Nicholls State University men's tennis team closed out the regular season with a doubleheader at No. 33 Alabama on Sunday night and was defeated in both matches, 4-0, at the Alabama Tennis Stadium.
 
The Colonels finish the regular season with an 11-12 overall record while Alabama evened its record to 14-14.
 
Doubles were not played in either match, and the Crimson Tide's eight victories in singles came in straight sets. In the first meeting, two of the sets went into extra points as Bernard Wezeman was defeated on the No. 4 court by Nikko Madregallejo 7-5, 6-3, and Lukas Clemens lost in a tiebreaker in his first set before being tied in the second set when his matched was called due to UA clinching the team victory.
 
In the night cap, Nico Mertens put up a fight in the first set against 25th-ranked Daniil Proskura on the No. 1 court, falling 7-5, 6-1. After dropping the first set, Wezeman was tied once again in his second set before the match was suspended.
 
The Colonels return to the courts on Friday, April 25, for the 2014 Southland Conference Championship, hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Nicholls, the No. 2 seed, will open up against either New Orleans or Lamar.
