CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – One of the Nicholls State University men's tennis team's most successful seasons in conference came to an end on Saturday afternoon as the No. 2 seeded Colonels were defeated 4-1 against No. 3 Lamar in the semifinals of the Southland Conference Tournament at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
 
Nicholls finishes the year 11-13 overall. The Colonels earned the No. 2 seed in the tournament after going 4-2 in conference play.
 
Unlike the first matchup against Lamar (14-12), the Colonels came up short in the doubles matches, dropping the No. 2 and 3 courts to fall behind 1-0. Partha Adavelly and Lukas Clemens were defeated 8-2 at No. 2 before LU claimed the point by knocking off Nico Mertens and Sam Meeseen on No. 3, 8-3.
 
In singles play, LU went up 3-0 after straight set wins on the No. 5 and 1 courts. Meessen fell 6-4, 6-3 to Jeandre Hoogenboezem and Adavelly was defeated 6-1, 7-6 (7-4). The Colonels picked up their only point of the day when Bernard Wezeman earned a three-set win at No. 3, defeating Juuso Laitinen 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
 
On the No. 2 court, Mertens won the first set against Nikita Lis, 4-6, but Lis won the next two, 6-4, 6-2, to end the match. Lukas Clemens and Kieran Cronin's matches were in three sets before play was suspended.
