THIBODAUX, La. – Playing in its final home game of 2014, the Nicholls State University softball team allowed six unanswered runs to Northwestern State as the Colonels fell 7-1 to the Lady Demons on Senior Day, Sunday at the Colonel Softball Complex.
After the game, Nicholls (18-32, 8-14) honored its three seniors –
Katie Holmes,
Brittany Marcet and
Katie Moulder. Marcet was 0-for-2 in her final game in front of the home crowd, but drew a walk to move within one of tying the career walks leader at 67.
Nicholls had nine hits in the loss, getting big days from
Danielle Phillips and
Kayla Prater, who each went 3-for-4. Phillips was responsible for the Colonels' lone RBI, driving in
Taylor Terrio, who led off the bottom of the first with a triple.
Northwestern State (24-20, 12-10) took a 1-0 lead in the top half on a RBI single by Brittany Virgoe. After Nicholls evened the game at 1-1, the Lady Demons received a two-out bases load double by Cali Burke to put NSU up 4-1 in the second.
The Lady Demons added two runs in the sixth, including a wind-aided home run by Brittney Jones, before Cassandra Barefield sent a rocket over the left center fence in the seventh for a 7-1 lead.
Hannah Haydel (6-13) took the loss for the Colonels, pitching 5.2 innings with six runs on eight hits while striking out five. Baylee Gray earned the win after recording all but one out and in 6.2 innings of shutout relief. For the third time in the series, NSU elected the pull their starting pitcher in the first inning.
The Colonels will wrap up the season at Central Arkansas, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 3.
