First place Colonels take on Tulane in a non-conference matchup Tuesday
THIBODAUX, La. – After taking sole possession of first place in the Southland Conference standings Sunday, the Nicholls State University baseball team will travel to New Orleans to face Tulane University in a non-conference midweek matchup on Tuesday.
The Colonels (25-20) most recently defeated the University of New Orleans 4-3 on Sunday, sweeping the series and bringing their winning streak to six games. The Green Wave (17-24) won their latest series against Wichita State, but dropped the series finale 10-3 on Sunday.
Nicholls lost to Tulane 1-0 in their only matchup of the season on February 25. Tyler Maples earned the win and Andrew Garner received the save, with
Jason McDonald taking the loss in the ballgame.
Ryan Deemes (2-2) will get the start on Tuesday, getting the nod for the 10
th time this season. Deemes has put together a string of dominant performances, allowing just three earned runs on 14 hits in his last five outings. Deemes is 2-0 in that stretch, with 16 strikeouts to just five walks and an ERA of 1.40.
Alex Massey (1-4) will get the start for the Green Wave on the hill. Massey has started four games for the Green Wave this season and posts and ERA of 8.31 with 26 strikeouts to 13 walks.
Leo Vargas leads the Colonels from the plate, hitting .314 with 36 runs scored on the season. Vargas is coming off of a dominant week, hitting .600 with a 1.000 slugging percentage, .650 on base percentage and earning Southland Conference Hitter of the Week honors.
Keith Cormier is second on the team, batting .304 with a team-high, 37 runs batted in.
Richard Carthon leads Tulane offensively, batting .287 with 15 RBIs and 25 runs on the year. Garrett Deschamp leads the Green Wave in runs batted in, with 27.
Nicholls and Tulane will play at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday in New Orleans. The game will be broadcast live on KTIB 640 AM.
Nicholls Student Programming Association is selling tickets to the game for $5, including charter bus travel.
