Colonels Overcome by the Green Wave 8-1

Final Stats NEW ORLEANS, La. – Nicholls State University baseball team fell to Tulane University 8-1 in New Orleans on Tuesday night.

The Colonels, who typically rely on their sound defense, had as many errors as they had hits, with four in each category.

The Green Wave got off to an early lead, scoring in the first inning on a single from Garrett Deschamp that scored Jake Willsey.

Tulane added a run in the fourth on a Grant Brown single that sent Hunter Hope home.

The Green Wave blew the game open in the sixth when Stephen Alemais crushed a three-run homerun to left center, advancing the Tulane lead to 5-0.

Things would not improve for the Colonels in the eighth inning. Alemais was walked with the bases loaded, scoring Lex Kaplan. Richard Carthon then reached on a bouncing fielder's choice to third in the subsequent at bat. On the play, Tyler Duplantis fired the ball back to Correa for the force out at home. Correa pumped to first, turned and attempted to pick off Brown who had rounded third, but sailed the throw into deep left field, allowing him to score. Deschamp notched a single on the next at bat to bring Alemais in for the final Green Wave run.

Nicholls erased the shutout in the ninth when Keith Cormier blasted a double to the centerfield wall, scoring Leo Vargas from first, but the Colonels would not come any closer.

Righty Ryan Deemes (2-3) took the loss, giving up two runs on six hits with a strikeout through four innings.

Alex Massey (2-4) earned the win, tossing six innings with just three hits while fanning seven Colonels batters.

Cormier led Nicholls offensively with a 1-for-3 outing and an RBI. Justin Holt went 1-for-2 on the night.

Alemais was the driving force behind Tulane's offensive explosion, going 2-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Hope was 2-for-4 and scored twice.

The Colonels will look to rebound as they return to Southland Conference play against Southeastern Louisiana University in an away-home-away series. The teams will face off on Friday at 6 p.m. in Hammond and on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Thibodaux, before returning to Hammond for the series finale at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
