Colonels Split Extra Innings Affairs against Islanders

Final Stats 1 | Final Stats 2 THIBODAUX, La. – After dropping a 2-1 decision in nine innings in Sunday's first game against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, the Nicholls State University softball team rallied late in game two to send the contest into extras before an RBI single by Danielle Phillips gave the Colonels a 6-5 walkoff victory in the ninth.
 
Nicholls (13-26, 4-9) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (8-29, 3-11) will wrap up the series on Monday, with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
 
Freshman Taylor Terrio led Nicholls at the plate, going 5-for-8 on the day with a double and a triple. Phillips had four hits while Haley Parkerson and Brooke Morris added three each.
 
In game one, the Colonels loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first, but were unable to bring home a run. The next inning saw the Islanders take a 1-0 lead on a mishandled ball up the middle by Brooke Morris which allowed a run to score.
 
Still facing a 1-0 deficit in the seventh, Morris and Terrio led off the inning with singles and moved into scoring position on a sac bunt. Phillips reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases and Brittany Marcet slapped a single to left to plate Terrio, tying the game at 1-1. With the bases still loaded, the Islanders got out of the jam with a 1-2-5 double play.
 
In the ninth, Jessica Mendez led off the inning for the Islanders with a triple and scored on a groundout. The Colonels then loaded the bases with one out, getting hits from Morris, Parkerson and Phillips, but Islander starter Liz Carter retired the next two batters for the win.
 
Carter (7-15) tossed all nine innings for AMCC, allowing one run on 12 hits. Hannah Haydel (3-10) suffered the loss, surrendering one earned run on 10 hits and struck out two.
 
In the night cap, the game was scoreless until the fifth when the Islanders scored four runs off of Colonel starter Taylor Hastings. AMCC scored two runs on a double by Jamise Jackson, one on an error and added one more on a double by Laura Lyles.
 
After the Islanders added another run in the top of the sixth on a double by Valerie Perez, the Colonels exploded for five runs in the bottom half to knot the game at 5-5. Terrio led off with a triple and scored on an error, and Kayla Prater came through with a two-out two-run double down the right field line to make the score 5-3. With two on, Haley Stevenson ripped a triple to right center to tie the game.
 
Following scoreless seventh and eighth innings, Morris and Olivia Van Hook led off the ninth for the Colonels with base hits. Parkerson drew a walk to load the bases, and Phillips ended the game after her line shot up the middle ricocheted  off of pitcher Constance Brandenburg, allowing Morris to score the game-winning run.
 
Morgan Skinner earned her first career win, tossing 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. Hastings pitched 5.2 innings, giving up three earned runs on seven hits and walked six.
 
Brandenburg threw all eight innings for AMCC, allowing two earned on 11 hits.
