The Colonels face elimination after falling to McNeese 4-2 on Wednesday
Final Stats CONWAY, Ark. – No. 7 seeded McNeese State University upset the No. 2 Nicholls State University baseball team 4-2 on Wednesday at Bear Stadium, forcing the Colonels into a win-or-go-home situation for the remainder of the Southland Conference Tournament.
The Colonels (32-24) swept the Cowboys (28-26) in the final series of the regular season, but were unable to overcome multiple running errors and fielding mistakes to capture a fourth straight victory over McNeese.
The Cowboys took an early lead after Chayse Marion flew out to right field, sending Andrew Guillotte home in the first inning. A wild pitch on the next at bat allowed James Cantu to score from third.
Jackson Gooch singled to center in the fifth, bringing Guillotte in for a 3-0 lead.
In the eighth inning, Gooch added an insurance run with a solo homerun over the left field wall.
The Colonels fought back in the bottom of the frame, aided by McNeese pitching miscues.
Darius Knight led off with a walk before
David Zorn and
Keith Cormier were both hit by pitches to load the bases.
Seth Stevens then crushed a double into deep right field that brought Knight and Zorn home, cutting the lead in half.
The Colonels looked to make a push in the final inning with a runner on and no outs, but
Tyler Duplantis was called out on a close call at second, before McNeese turned a double play to end the contest.
Kaleb Jon Fontenot (6-2) picked up the win for the Cowboys, tossing six shutout innings while allowing just five hits while fanning five batters.
Ryan Deemes (3-4) took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits with two strikeouts through four innings of work.
Guillotte had two hits and scored twice, while Gooch had two hits, an RBI and a run to lead the Cowboys.
Stevens led the Colonels offensively, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.
The Colonels will play tomorrow at noon, facing the loser of No. 3 seed Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and No. 6 seed Central Arkansas. The game will be broadcast live on KTIB 640 AM.
