Colonels Take Comeback Win Over Lions 5-3

Final Stats THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team fell behind Southeastern Louisiana University early, but six-hit, five run explosion in the sixth inning propelled the Colonels to a 5-3 victory.

The Lions (28-20, 13-10 SLC) got on the board in the second inning after Sam Roberson walked and eventually came home on a Kennon Menard ground out.

In the fourth, a Menard single up the middle allowed Daniel Midyett to score.

The Colonels (26-22, 16-7 SLC) had just two hits entering the sixth inning, but Leo Vargas led off with a single to left field and the team caught fire. Keith Cormier blasted a double to right center, scoring Vargas before a Christian Correa single brought Cormier home and tied the game. Charles Morton notched a single through the right side, advancing Correa to second before Tyler Duplantis singled to right center, scoring Correa. After a pitching change, David Zorn tripled into the right field corner, clearing the bases and giving Nicholls a 5-2 lead.

Southeastern looked to mount a comeback in the seventh. Kyle Cedotal singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jacob Williams grounded out, advancing Cedotal to third. Jacob Seward then notched a single through the right side, scoring Cedotal. But the Colonel defense came up big, turning their third double play of the game and ending the inning.

The Lions threatened in the eighth, but Correa picked off a runner at first and caught a runner stealing third to help neutralize any chance of a comeback.

Grant Borne (7-2) earned the win, tossing eight innings with three runs on ten hits, five strikeouts and two walks. Stuart Holmes delivered a stifling pitching effort for the final frame, earning his fourth save of the season while striking out two.

Tate Scioneaux (6-5) took the loss, throwing 5 2/3 innings while surrendering five runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.
