Taylor Byrd threw four innings in his no decision at SFA
Final Stats NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Nicholls State University baseball team was held to just three hits in Friday night's series opener at Stephen F. Austin but scored two late runs on an error to tie the game before the Lumberjacks ended the contest in the ninth with a run for a 4-3 walkoff victory.
With the loss, Nicholls falls to 27-24 on the year and 16-9 in conference play. The Colonels are now in fourth place in the standings with five games to go, trailing Texas A&M-Corpus Christi by 1.5 games after the Islanders' Friday night game was postponed.
At the plate,
Keith Cormier,
Darius Knight and
Seth Stevens all had hits for the Colonels, with Steven's giving Nicholls a 1-0 lead in the first with a RBI single to center which drove in Cormier. The Lumberjacks (18-30, 9-16) tied the game in the third with a two-out infield single by Mackenzie Handel.
SFA tagged Colonel starter
Taylor Byrd for two runs on three hits in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. Byrd pitched four innings on the night, allowing three earned on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
Nicholls had trouble against Dillon Mangham, who tossed seven solid innings for the 'Jacks, allowing just the lone run in the first and surrendered two hits. Mangham fanned six Colonels and issued three walks.
In the Colonel eighth, Knight singled to lead off the frame, but was thrown out on a fielder's choice after
Leo Vargas reached base on a walk. Following a double steal, Stevens reached on a throwing error by Nick Ramos at third base which allowed two runs to score, tying the game at 3-3.
In the bottom of the ninth, the 'Jacks loaded the bases with no outs after a single and two walks. The Colonels prevented a run to score on a fielder's choice, but SFA brought home the winning run on an error by
Christian Correa for the walkoff win.
SFA had six hits in the game, led by Conner Fikes who went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Cameron Gann picked up the win, throwing two innings of relief.
For the Colonels,
Stuart Holmes had a strong night out of the bullpen, tossing three hitless innings.
Zach Thiac was credited with the loss, allowing one run on one hit.
