THIBODAUX, La. –
Nicholls State University head football coach Charlie Stubbs' first thought of Darrel Brown was about "the big smile he always had on his face."

Former Colonel defensive lineman Brown, 22, drowned in a boating accident Friday evening of July 25. A native of Covington, La., Brown was a three-year starter for the Colonels, lettering from 2009-12.

"Darrel will definitely be missed," Coach Stubbs said. "He was great to coach and he was a very fine young man. He left a very positive mark on not only our football program, but the university as well. Our sympathies go out to his family and our thoughts and prayers are with him."

For his career, Brown had 136 tackles, 13 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. But those numbers do not reflect the significant impact that he had off the field.

Once the news of his passing started spreading over the weekend, Brown's friends, family, teammates and coaches flooded social media with their thoughts and prayers. Many of his friends shared photos and memories on his Facebook profile.

Nicholls Offensive Line Coach Matt Clark wrote on Twitter, "On Friday, we at the Colonel Family lost one of our own. I only knew Darrel Brown for the 2012 season, but I can say in all sincerity that he was truly a joy to be around. He was a great presence in our locker room and a great ambassador for our team and university. Even when things on the field were not always going our way, he was incredibly positive and always uplifting. He battled through injuries and never complained; he was the type of guy you wanted to play with. I can say that I am better off having known him, however briefly. Rest in peace Darrel, you will be missed by many."

Brown graduated from Nicholls in 2013 with a Bachelor's in business. After college, he began his career in sales with AFLAC Insurance.
