Colonels fall 3-0 to South Alabama in Sweltering Heat

Final Stats MOBILE, Ala. – The Nicholls State University women's soccer team fell 3-0 on Sunday afternoon to South Alabama in challenging weather conditions.

Under a heat advisory in 97-degree temperatures the Colonels (1-1) could not overcome a 3-0 first-half deficit despite a valiant second-half effort. The Jaguars (1-1) took a 2-0 lead just 14 minutes into the game, and added a third goal before the half.

Just five minutes into the contest Danielle Henley scored on a shot from 20 yards out, assisted by Nikki Shirtcliffe. Only nine minutes later, Henley gained possession off of a corner kick and fired a shot passed Nicholls' goalie Taylor Mosley for her second consecutive score.

In the 44th minute, Rio Hardy took a pass from Alyssa Pejic and slipped it under the outstretched arms of a diving Mosley for the third and final goal of the match.

The Colonels had an opportunity to score just 16 seconds into the game, but Spencer Valdespino's shot narrowly sailed over the goal.

Nicholls took just four shots on the day with Valdespino, Ainsley Pratt, Jess Coates and Kaitlyn Caro recording one shot apiece.

The loss is a disappointing one for the Colonels who were coming off of a 2-1 upset against Southern Mississippi on Friday.

"This is one of the toughest starts to a season we've had," Head Coach Dylan Harrison said. "We played some really tough opponents and were able to leave with a split. Playing teams like South Alabama and Southern Miss is really going to prepare us for conference play. We have all the believe in our team and the ability that they have."

The Colonels will take on the Crowne Plaza Hotel Invitational next weekend, facing Arkansas-Little Rock on Friday and Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Sunday.
