Final Stats 2 HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Nicholls State University women's volleyball team split their two matches on Saturday, defeating the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff 3-0 before falling to the University of Southern Mississippi 3-1 at Reed Green Coliseum.
The Colonels (2-1) had a successful weekend, winning their first two contests in the Southern Miss Invitational tournament before dropping their third to a stout Golden Eagle team.
In their first match on Saturday, Nicholls defeated UAPB decisively in three straight games. Five different Colonels registered at least six kills, while
Kalynn Egea led the way in digs (19) and
Ainsley Marroccoli had a team-high 39 assists.
The Colonels took the first set easily, winning 25-11. The Lady Lions made things interesting in the second set, but were outscored 25-21 for the 2-0 Nicholls lead. The Colonels closed out the match with a 25-15 third set.
In the second match of the day, Nicholls faced a tough Southern Miss squad. The Golden Eagles were on the attack early, defeating the Colonels in a dominant 25-8 first set. Nicholls fought back in the second set, but lost 25-22, before stealing the third set 25-23. Ultimately, the Colonels could not overcome Southern Miss, losing the final set 25-13.
Kaci Eaton led Nicholls in kills with 10, Egea had a team-high 12 digs and Marroccoli registered 31 assists.
At the conclusion of the weekend, both Egea and
Mikayla Miller were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Nicholls will head to Lafayette, La on Friday to compete in the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Volleyball Class. The Colonels will open the weekend on Friday at 4:30 p.m. against Southern University.
