Nicholls will play its next three games on the road
THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University football team heads to the Lone State State in search of not only its first win of the season, but it's first victory against former Southland Conference foe North Texas as the Colonels and Mean Green square off at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13 at Apogee Stadium.

The Colonels (0-3) are coming off a 27-10 loss in their home opener against Henderson State, resulting in Nicholls' ninth consecutive loss dating back to last October. In their first game against a non-FBS team, the Colonels had the same issues against the Reddies, never being able to establish a running game on offense, and had trouble slowing down the rush on defense. Henderson State led 18-0 in the third quarter, and despite 10 consecutive points by Nicholls, the Colonels were never able to get any closer.
The biggest news of the weekend came on Sunday as Nicholls head coach Charlie Stubbs, in his fifth year with the program, announced his resignation due to health concerns. On Tuesday, the program hired longtime offensive coordinator
Steve Axman as interim head coach. Axman jumped into the role immediately and will coach his first game with the program on Saturday.
Axman will look to bring a positive impact to the offense, as the group has lacked production through the first three games. Out of 11 teams in the Southland Conference, Nicholls ranks last in rushing offense (61.7 ypg), 10th in scoring offense (11.0 ppg) and total offense (252.3 ypg) and eighth in passing offense (190.7 ypg). After rushing for over 100 yards in every game except in the opener at Oregon, the Colonels have been held to less than 100 yards in all three games this year.
Quarterback
Kalen Henderson is slated to make the start under center, leading the team with 388 yards passing and one touchdown on the year.
Tobias Lofton has a team-best 88 yards rushing and two touchdowns, and Darryl Watson heads the receivers with 113 yards on nine receptions.
The defense ranks sixth in the FCS passing yards allowed (125.7), but dead last in rushing defense (415.3). After last weekend's game,
Ronnie Walker took over the team lead in tackles with 27 after his career-high 14 tackles.
North Texas heads into the matchup with a 1-2 record after falling in its Conference USA opener to Louisiana Tech, 45-21. The Mean Green opened the season with a 38-7 loss at Texas before winning their home opener against SMU, 43-6.
North Texas, which was a member of the Southland in the early 90's, will be looking to stay undefeated in the series, holding a 5-0 record against the Colonels. The last meeting took play in Denton in 2002 with the Mean Green pitching a shutout, 23-0.
