THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's soccer team will take on the University of Louisiana at Monroe at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Nicholls Soccer Complex in the first home contest of the year.
The Colonels (2-3) were set to play their home-opener against the University of Louisiana-Lafayette on Friday, but the game was postponed due to heavy rains and lightning in the area. Nicholls will look to rebound after a loss to LSU on Tuesday night, and try to gain momentum before heading into conference play in the coming weeks.
The Warhawks (4-1) won their first four games of the year, but are coming off of a 4-0 loss to Southeastern Louisiana on Friday, and hope to play spoiler in the home opener for Nicholls.
In their only matchup last season, the Colonels defeated ULM 3-2 in overtime with
Spencer Valdespino scoring the winning goal for Nicholls in the 93
rd minute.
This season the Colonels are led offensively by freshman
Kaitlyn Caro who has a team-high, two goals and two assists. Nicholls has spread their offense around, with 10 different Colonels scoring on 11 goals this year. Valdespino has not found the back of the net so far in the young season, but is staying aggressive with 14 shots through five games.
Jenna Pillon leads the Warhawks with four goals and two assists on the season. Karlea Fehr and Kelley O'Dwyer have three goals and three assists each.
On the defensive end, goalie
Taylor Mosley has registered 23 saves, while allowing 2.56 goals per game with a .697 save percentage for Nicholls.
Katherine Werther has shouldered the defensive load for ULM, with 9 saves while allowing no goals in three games.
