Final Stats NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Nicholls State University women's soccer team was locked in a 0-0 draw with undefeated No. 1 Stephen F. Austin through the first 43 minutes of action on Friday night, but the Ladyjacks poured on four goals over the final 47 minutes to run away with the win.
The Colonels (3-9-1, 1-5-0 SLC) played some of their best defense of the year during the first period, consistently repelling attacks from a talented Stephen F. Austin squad.
The Ladyjacks (6-6-2, 5-0-2 SLC) broke the stalemate in the 43
rd minute when Madison Hall collected a pass from Rachel Owens in traffic and fired a bullet past diving goalkeeper,
Taylor Mosley, for the first goal of the match.
Stephen F. Austin took a 1-0 advantage into the break.
Twelve minutes into period two, the Nicholls defense had its first true letdown of the night. The Colonels parted down the center of the field, allowing Hanna Barker a free run at the net. Mosley did everything in her power to prevent the score, lunging forward in an acrobatic attempt to corral the ball, but Barker's shot ricocheted into the net two put the Ladyjacks up, 2-0.
Stephen F. Austin pushed its lead to four and ended Nicholls' hopes of a comeback when Amanda Doyle and Breanna Moore scored back-two-back goals in less than a minute.
Spencer Valdespino led the Colonels offensively with six shots, one on goal.
Bethany Hollier was the only other Nicholls player to record a shot.
Barker and Moore each recorded a goal and an assist to pace the Ladyjacks.
Nicholls will battle No. 3 Sam Houston on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Houston. Following this weekend's action, the Colonels will close out the regular season with home matches against Northwestern State (Friday, Oct. 23 at 4 p.m.), Central Arkansas (Sunday, Oct. 25 at 1 p.m.) and Southeastern La. (Friday, Oct. 30 at 4 p.m.).
