Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Nicholls Soccer Blanks Sam Houston, 2-0, on the Road

HOUSTON, Texas Taking a cue from the Nicholls State University football team who broke their 23-game losing streak on Saturday, women's soccer snapped a three-game skid of its own by downing a talented Sam Houston squad, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon in the Lone Star State.

Spencer Valdespino scored both Nicholls goals against the second-best defense in the Southland Conference, and the Colonels (4-9-1, 2-6-0 SLC) held the Bearkats (7-6-2, 4-3-1 SLC) scoreless to earn the win at Joseph Pritchett Field.

After 44 minutes of scoreless action, Valdespino made two defenders miss and fired a shot into the top right corner of the net over a diving Kylie Hambelton.

Nicholls took a 1-0 lead into the break.

The score remained the same until the 73rd minute, when a yellow card awarded to Hambleton gave Valdespino a penalty kick opportunity. Valdespino converted the try to put the Colonels up two.

Nicholls locked down defensively over the final 17 minutes and held on for the victory.

Valdespino tied a career-high with 12 shots to lead the Colonels, equaling the 12 shots that Sam Houston took as a team. The last time Valdespino totaled 12 shots in a match also came against Sam Houston back in 2013. Hannah Savoie finished with two shots, one on goal. Haylee Atwell, Erin Flores, Francesca Curteis and Mie Elvestad each contributed a shot.

Four different Bearkat players had two shots in the loss.

After sitting out Friday's loss to SFA, Nicholls goalkeeper Amanda Boylson (3-7, 2-5 SLC) was outstanding on Sunday, earning five saves in the shutout win.

In the net for Sam Houston, Hambleton totaled two saves while surrendering two goals.

Following this weekend's action, the Colonels will close out the regular season with home matches against Northwestern State (Friday, Oct. 23 at 4 p.m.), Central Arkansas (Sunday, Oct. 25 at 1 p.m.) and Southeastern La. (Friday, Oct. 30 at 4 p.m.).
