Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Early Miscues Doom Nicholls Soccer on Sunday

HOUSTON, Texas The Nicholls State University women's soccer team won the second period, but allowed three header goals in a sloppy first to fall, 3-1, against a challenging Houston Baptist squad on Sunday afternoon.

The Huskies (6-3-1, 4-1-0 SLC) took an early lead when Sabriah Spencer headed in a pass from Ellee Hall off of a corner kick only seven minutes into the match.

Twenty minutes later, Spencer found the net for her second score of the game, heading a pass from Blake Martin.

In the 39th minute, Martin scored a header off of a corner from Alessia Del Monte, and Houston Baptist took a 3-0 advantage into the break.

Spencer Valdespino attempted to put the Colonels (3-7-1, 1-4-0 SLC) on her back in the second half. Seven minutes into period two, Valdespino fired a bullet into the back of the net, giving Nicholls faint hope.

The Colonels played significantly better over the second period, outshooting the Huskies and holding HBU scoreless, but Nicholls was unable to climb out of its deep first-half hole.

Valdespino finished with five shots on the day to pace the Colonels. Emily Werenskiold had three shots, two on goal, and Erin Blackwell recorded one shot.

Spencer had three shots on goal to lead Houston Baptist.

Amanda Boylson (1-6) took the loss, surrendering three goals while registering four saves.

Katie Turner (4-2-1) earned the win, receiving two saves and allowing one goal.

Nicholls will return to Thibodaux and face off with McNeese State on Friday, Oct. 9 at 4 p.m.
