Colonels Go For History against Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's basketball team will try to keep pace in the Southland Conference race as the Colonels look to win a program best sixth game in a row as they take on rival Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 1 p.m. at Stopher Gymnasium.

The Colonels, who sit in third place and a loss behind Lamar and Stephen F. Austin in the Southland standings, have had winning streaks of five games six times throughout their program history, including in each of the last four seasons. This season will mark the first time in the last four campaigns that Nicholls will have the opportunity to play on its home court for the sixth win. Since the start of the 2011-12 season, the Colonels are 36-10 at Stopher including a 7-2 mark this season.

Nicholls (12-10, 8-3) is in the middle of a three-game home stand, with only two home contests remaining after Saturday's contest. The Colonels started the stand with a 70-59 win over McNeese State last Saturday where Jenny Nash scored a career-high 26 points. Nash went on to win both Southland Conference and Louisiana Sports Writers Association Women's Basketball Player of the Week.

Nash continues to lead Nicholls in the three main statistical categories - points (13.7), rebounds (5.8) and assists (2.7).  Emani White, who has been coming off the bench since returning from an injury, is averaging 10.6 points after scoring 10 first-half points in the win over McNeese. White needs just eight points to become the 13th player in program history to score 1,000 points.

During the five-game winning streak, Nicholls has played lockdown defense by allowing just 52.6 points per game. The opposition is shooting just 38 percent from the field, 20 percent from 3-point range and the Colonels are winning by an average of 14.8 points.

Southeastern is coming off a 66-62 loss at McNeese State, which dropped the Lady Lions to 7-15 overall and 3-8 in Southland play. SLU has fallen into a funk as of late, winning just one of its last eight contests. The Lady Lions head to Thibodaux searching for their first road win of the season, currently posting an 0-11 mark.

On offense, SLU is led by three players averaging double figures – Symone Miller (12.0 ppg), Nanna Pool (11.4) and Elizabeth Styles (10.4). Styles also leads the Southland Conference in assists, averaging 6.2 per game.

The teams split the series last season, with both teams winning at home. Despite the matchups being closely contest over the last few years, SLU still holds a significant 56-17 lead in the all-time series.

Nicholls will close out its home stand on Wednesday, Feb. 18, against Northwestern State. The game will serve as the team's annual Stuff Stopher event.
