Nicholls Women’s Tennis Sweeps Tuesday’s Doubleheader

THIBODAUX, La. – Making their 2015 home debut, the Nicholls State University women's tennis team put together a pair of dominating performances in front of their home fans at the Colonel Tennis Complex as the Colonels swept their a doubleheader against Xavier (La.) and Southeast Missouri State at the by winning each match, 4-0.
 
With the victories, Nicholls improved to 9-2 on the year. The Colonels will look continue their hot streak on Thursday at McNeese State. The Colonels enter the matchup 3-0 in Southland play, while the Cowgirls sit at 2-0.
 
Although the Colonels shutout Xavier in the first match, the Gold Nuggets made the Red and Gray earn the doubles point with three close matches. Xavier started out with an 8-6 win on the No. 2 court, but Laia Charles and Emma Kranendonk evened the score with an 8-6 victory at No. 3. With the point up for grabs, Kateryna Nakonechna and Isla Brock narrowly defeated Caroline Vernet / Simone-Alyse Ewell on the No. 1 court, 8-7, to give Nicholls a 1-0 lead.
 
In singles, Nicholls quickly clinched the team victory by taking the first three completed matches. Milou Pietersz won at No. 2 over Carmen Nelson, 6-2, 6-0, Stephanie Barnett took the No. 1 court by retirement and Nakonechna ended the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 4 versus Brandi Nelson.
 
Against Southeast Missouri, the outcomes were the same but the scores were a little more lopsided. Barnett and Klara Skopac dominated the No. 1 court in doubles, 8-1, while Nakonechna / Brock won 8-2 at No. 3.
 
Brock stayed undefeated on the year in singles, picking up her sixth win with a 6-0, 6-1 victory on the No. 3 court. Nakonechna won both of her sets on the No. 4 court, 6-1, and Charles took her first set, 6-3, before winning by retirement at No. 6.
