Colonels Blanked in Series Opener against lslanders; Saturday’s Doubleheader Move Up

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University softball team was held to just three hits in Friday night's series opener against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as the Islanders came away with a 4-0 victory at the Colonel Softball Complex.

Due to the possibility of heavy showers tomorrow evening, Saturday's doubleheader against the Islanders has been pushed up to 9 a.m. The series finale twin bill was originally scheduled for 12 p.m.

Nicholls (16-10, 4-3 SLC) was led at the plate by freshman Payton Gremillion, who was the lone Colonel to record multi-hits against Islander starting pitcher Liz Carter (4-11). Gremillion finished 2-for-3 on the night, while Alexis Huss tallied the Colonels' other hit.

A&M-Corpus Christi (5-18-1, 1-6 SLC) had nine hits in the win, led by Dani Tefft with three. Tefft singled in the first to help set up the Islanders early 1-0 lead. Brittney Morse put AMCC on the board with a rare two-base sacrifice fly.

In the third, Tefft scored on a double by Mikayla Cochran before the Islanders tacked on two more runs in the next inning. A double steal led to a 3-0 lead and Tefft then capped the scoring with a RBI single to the right side.

The four runs was more than enough for Carter, who faced the minimum in four different innings. She tossed only 79 pitches in seven innings of work and struck out two.

Hannah Haydel (9-5) took the loss for Nicholls, allowing three earned runs on eight hits. Haydel notched a complete game as well and added five strikeouts.
