The Colonels will be aiming for their 17th victory in their regular season finale
THIBODAUX, La. – With one game remaining on the regular season schedule, the Nicholls State University women's basketball team will be looking to secure the No. 3 seed in next week's Southland Conference Tournament as the Colonels head to Hammond to face Southeastern Louisiana at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday at the University Center.
The game will air live on KNSU 91.5 FM, with pregame coverage scheduled for 4:20 p.m. Live stats will also be available by visiting geauxcolonels.com.
Nicholls (16-12, 12-5 SLC) has won its last two games and will be going for a season sweep of Southeastern (7-21, 3-14 SLC). The Colonels defeated SLU at home on Feb. 14 in a 93-80 shootout, which was win No. 6 of the Colonels' seven-game winning streak.
With a win over Southeastern, Nicholls will be the No. 3 seed and finish with a program record 13 Southland victories. If the Colonels lose on Saturday and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi defeats Abilene Christian, Nicholls would fall to No. 4 due to a tiebreaker. If Nicholls and Corpus Christi both lose, the Colonels will remain at No. 3.
Nicholls clinched a bye on Thursday after grinding it out with Central Arkansas for a 53-43 victory on Senior Night. The Colonels led by 21 in the first half but shot just 20 percent after the break, allowing UCA to come as close as four points in the final minutes. Nicholls is shooting just 69 percent at the free throw line, which is the lowest mark since head coach
DoBee Plaisance's first season in 2008-09, but the Colonels made their last six free throws to put the game away.
The Colonels head into the final game ranked sixth in the Southland in scoring offense (63.2 ppg) and defense (63.1). Thursday's win marked the sixth time this season that Nicholls has held opponents to less than 50 points.
On offense, Nicholls has three players averaging 9.0 points or more, led by first-team All-Southland candidate
Jenny Nash at 13.9 ppg. Along with a conference-best 74 made 3-pointers, Nash leads the Colonels with 6.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists.
Emani White is second in scoring at 10.4 points and freshman
Tia Charles is averaging 9.0 points after her 11-point effort against UCA.
Southeastern will be looking to send their seniors out on a high note by snapping their current nine-game losing streak. The Lady Lions fell to New Orleans on Thursday night, 84-75, which was their 13th loss in their last 14 games.
SLU is led on offense by Nanna Pool, averaging 11.5 points on 48.4 percent shooting. Pool also has a team-best 8.8 rebounds per game and leads the Lady Lions with 34 blocks. Elizabeth Styles, who leads the Southland with 6.4 assists per game, and Symone Miller are averaging 9.4 points.
Following the regular season finale, Nicholls will make its fourth consecutive appearance in the Southland Conference Tournament in Katy, Texas, with their first game slated for Friday, March 13, at 11 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. in the Merrell Center.
