NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team held an early lead over Tulane, but couldn't keep up with the Green Wave offense, falling 7-1, on Tuesday night at Turchin Stadium.
The Colonels (18-13-1) grabbed a 1-0 advantage briefly in the first inning.
Justin Holt singled up the middle, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a monster triple from
Marc Frazier that struck the right field wall.
Tulane (21-12) punched back in the bottom of the frame, converting two singles and a triple into a pair of runs to capture the lead.
The Green Wave took advantage of a Nicholls throwing error to add a run in the third. Jake Willsey reached on the error, advanced on a Richard Carthon single to right and came home on a Stephen Alemais single.
Tulane continued scoring in waves, pouring on two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and another in the sixth to take a 7-1 lead.
Cole Stapler (2-1) took the loss, surrendering three runs (two earned) on six hits through three innings on the hill.
Ian Gibaut (5-3) earned the win, tossing three innings and allowing just one run on three hits with two strikeouts.
Gavin Wehby paced the Colonels offensively, batting 2-for-3.
Five Green Wave batters turned in multi-hit outings, led by Hunter Williams, who went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
