MOBILE, Ala. – Battling blistering temperatures and the defending Southern States Athletic Conference Champion Mobile Rams, the Nicholls State University soccer team excelled in a three-part exhibition match on Tuesday at "The Jungle".
Senior midfielder
Jess Coates stole the show, scoring both Colonel goals only minutes after being named to the Preseason All-Southland Conference First Team. Her first goal was called back for an offsides penalty. Senior forward
Spencer Valdespino also took earned preseason first team honors.
Senior midfielder
Kaylie Daniels assisted on the first goal from Coates, while junior forward
Hannah Savoie picked up the assist on Coates' second goal.
Unlike a traditional 90-minute contest, Tuesday's exhibition was broken up into three 30-minute sections. The tune-up was used as an opportunity for coaches to experiment with lineups and prepare their teams for the upcoming regular season.
The Colonels will host Louisiana College for an exhibition matchup at 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 21 at the Nicholls Soccer Complex, before opening the 2015 regular season on the road against Louisiana-Lafayette at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 23.
The squad's contest on Aug. 21 will feature a familiar face, as the Colonels battle the Wildcats, coached by former Colonel soccer player Samantha Etherington. Etherington was named Head Coach for the Louisiana College soccer program on May 5.
