THIBODAUX, La. – Last season the Nicholls State University women's soccer team defeated Southern Miss for the first time in program history, taking a 2-1 victory in Hattiesburg. Coming off of a hard-fought loss at Louisiana-Lafayette on Sunday, the Colonels will look to repeat of last year's performance against the Golden Eagles in the team's Red Out home opener on Friday at 4 p.m.
Nicholls (0-1) will wear red jerseys for the match and fans are encouraged to wear red in support of the Colonels!
Nicholls outshot the Ragin' Cajuns on Sunday, including several shots that came only inches from finding the net, but the Colonels were unable come away with a victory in their regular-season opener, falling 2-0.
Southern Miss (1-0-1) is coming off of a pair of double-overtime marathon games against Arkansas State and Jackson State. The Golden Eagles defeated the Red Wolves, 2-1, on Friday, before tying the Lady Tigers, 1-1, on Sunday.
Southern Miss owns the all-time series against Nicholls 5-1. Prior to last year's Colonel victory, Nicholls was outscored 23-1 through five games against Golden Eagles, including a 6-0 Southern Miss win in
Dylan Harrison's first game as head coach for the Colonels in 2009.
This year Nicholls is led by Preseason All-Southland First Team honorees
Jess Coates and
Spencer Valdespino. Freshman
Lindsay Gardner paced the Colonels offensively with three shots against Louisiana-Lafayette. Senior
Amanda Boylson recorded six saves while allowing two goals in the net.
Somer Jones spearheads the Southern Miss offensive attack with six shots and one goal through two games this season. Goalkeeper Brittany Taylor has earned eight saves and surrendered two goals.
The Colonels will face Southern Miss before hosting Southern on Sunday, Aug. 30 at 1 p.m.
