Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Colonels Lose Heartbreaker to Lamar in Conference Opener

BEAUMONT, TexasThe Nicholls State University women's soccer team and Lamar University were locked in a 0-0 draw through 89 minutes of action on Friday night, but a Cardinal goal with 18 second remaining lifted Lamar to victory at the Lamar Soccer Complex.

Just as the match looked to be heading into overtime, Cardinal forward Mari Olastuen chipped in a shot for a last second game-winner. On the play, Savannah Boswell headed the would-be goal away and it was cleared by Hannah Savoie. The referees did not initially rule the shot a goal, but after deliberation a goal was awarded to Lamar. It was a heartbreaking loss for a Nicholls squad that appeared to be in control for the entire match.

The Colonels (2-4-1, 0-1 SLC) outshot the Cardinals (5-4-0, 1-0 SLC), finishing the night with 21 shots (nine on goal) compared to only 10 shots (five on goal) for Lamar. Despite the discrepancy, the Cardinals were able to find the net when it mattered most.

Boylson was outstanding in the loss, finishing with four saves, including a save on a penalty kick at the 51-minute mark.

Lauren Lovejoy earned the first shutout of her career, totaling nine saves.

Spencer Valdespino led Nicholls offensively with eight shots. Francesca Curteis paced the team with four shots on goal.

Following Lamar's game-winner, Head Coach Dylan Harrison was awarded a red card.

The Colonels will return home to host Abilene Christian at 4 p.m. on Friday and Incarnate Word at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
