LAFAYETTE, La. – The Nicholls State University women's volleyball team took Louisiana-Lafayette to five sets in their opening match on Saturday, falling 3-2, before downing Jackson State in straight sets to close out their weekend at the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Volleyball Classic.
In the first match of the day, the Colonels (3-3) grabbed an early 4-3 lead and never trailed for the remainder of the set, cruising to a 25-20 win over the host Ragin' Cajuns (2-4). Louisiana-Lafayette flipped the script in set two, never trailing, en route to a 25-20 win of their own. The Ragin' Cajuns jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the third set, running away with a 25-15 victory, but Nicholls responded in the fourth, recapturing momentum with a mirrored 25-15 win. In the pivotal fifth set, the Colonels held leads of 5-3, 7-4 and 9-5, but Louisiana-Lafayette used a 7-2 run over the final minutes to steal the match.
Alyse Barclay was outstanding against the Ragin' Cajuns, finishing with 47 assists and just one error.
Kayla Mashburn paced the squad with 26 kills and nine digs, while
Stephanie Tobison earned team-highs in digs (14) and services aces (three).
Jessica Bartczyszyn led Louisiana-Lafayette with 37 assists, Chanelle Gardner totaled 16 kills and Sydney Davis earned 14 digs in the win.
Despite playing back-to-back five-set matches to open the tournament, the Colonels appeared to have plenty of energy in reserve for their tournament-finale battle with Jackson State. Nicholls scored the fix six points in set one and never looked back, downing the Tigers, 25-19. The Colonels took a 25-18 win in the second set, before a hard-fought 25-23 win to seal the match.
Barclay paced Nicholls with 20 assists,
Anna Niederhauser earned team-highs in kills (14) and service aces (three) and
Kayla Mashburn led the squad with nine digs.
Jenna Siddiqui led Jackson State with 31 assists, Taija Thomas had 13 kills and Tyler Moorer earned 11 digs in the loss.
The Colonels will see their next action closer to home as Nicholls heads to New Orleans for the AllState Sugar Bowl Collegiate Classic, hosted by Tulane. The Colonels will open the weekend against North Carolina State at 2 p.m. on Friday, before facing the Green Wave at 7 p.m. The team will close out the tournament against TCU at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
