THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University men's basketball team is set for three straight games in Texas, beginning with a matchup against Houston Baptist at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
The Colonels (5-11, 1-1 SLC) are coming off of a 63-62 victory over Abilene Christian on Saturday, but face a challenging road swing against the top three teams in the Southland Conference. Nicholls' next three opponents have a combined 10-0 record in league play.
The Huskies (8-7, 3-0 SLC) are riding a four-game win streak, including a 77-58 win against Southeastern La. on Saturday.
The Colonels hold an 11-10 edge in the all-time series against Houston Baptist. Nicholls has won the last five meetings, including a 61-57 victory on Jan. 13, last season in Thibodaux.
The Colonels are averaging 65 points and surrendering 70.5 in Southland play. Through two conference matchups, Nicholls is shooting 38.4% from the floor and 30.6% from three-point range, while allowing 40.3% and 36.4% respectively. The Colonels have a -5.0 rebounding margin and a -4.0 turnover margin against league opponents.
In Southland play the Huskies are averaging 86 points and holding opponents to just 68. HBU is shooting 48.3% from the field and 39.3% from beyond the arc, while allowing 36.3% and 33.3% respectively, through three conference contests. The Huskies have a +7.0 rebounding margin and a +2.0 turnover margin in league games. Houston Baptist is shooting 46.5% from the field overall, which leads the Southland Conference.
Ja'Dante' Frye spearheads the Nicholls attack, averaging 14.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game in Southland play.
T.J. Carpenter is averaging 3.0 assists against conference opponents, and is second on the team in average points (13.0) and rebounds (4.5). Carpenter is coming off of a team-high 16-point performance against Abilene Christian, which put him over the 1000-point threshold for his career.
Liam Thomas is averaging 4.0 blocks per game and paces the Colonels with 6.0 rebounds per game in league play.
Anthony Odunsi (22.3 points) and Colter Lasher (8.0 boards and 7.0 assists) lead the Huskies.
Nicholls will face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday, before a date with Sam Houston on Monday.
