NEW ORLEANS, La. – Records will go completely out the window in a battle between in-state rivals as the Nicholls State University men's basketball team heads to the Big Easy for a matchup with New Orleans at 7 p.m. on Monday.
The Colonels (5-17, 1-7 SLC) hope to snap a six-game losing streak and avoid their 14
th consecutive road loss, while the Privateers (7-12, 3-5 SLC) look to play spoiler on their home court.
Last season Nicholls swept the two-game regular season series against New Orleans, only to be upset by the Privateers, 82-73, on March 11 in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament.
New Orleans owns a 15-8 edge in the all-time series against the Colonels, while Nicholls has won six of the last nine meetings.
The Colonels average 67.6 points and surrender 80.2. Nicholls shoots 40.7% from the floor and 30.8% from three-point range, while allowing 47.3% and 33.6% respectively. The Colonels have a -8.0 rebounding margin and a -1.9 turnover margin this year.
The Privateers average 73.2 points and give up 74.6. New Orleans shoots 41.1% from the field and 34.4% from beyond the arc, while allowing 43.4% and 32.8% respectively. The Privateers have a -0.1 rebounding margin and a +2.0 turnover margin on the season.
Ja'Dante' Frye has led Nicholls offensively all season, but the Colonels have moved to a balanced offensive attack since entering league play.
T.J. Carpenter (14.5), Frye (12.4),
Liam Thomas (10.5) and
Johnathan Bell (10.0) all currently average double figures against conference opponents. Carpenter leads Nicholls with 5.1 boards and
Schane Rillieux paces the squad with 4.6 assists.
Kevin Hill (13.6 points), Erik Thomas (8.0 rebounds) and Christavious Gill (2.9 assists) lead New Orleans in Southland play.
The Colonels will host McNeese at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, before a matchup with Incarnate Word at 6:30 p.m. on Monday in Thibodaux.
