THIBODAUX, La. – Senior guard
Taylor Morrison scored a career-high 18 points to lead four players in double figures as the Nicholls State University women's basketball team defeated ULM, 73-54, Saturday afternoon at Stopher Gym.
The win was the first for the Colonels this season (1-2), while ULM slipped to 1-3. Nicholls will play at home again on Tuesday (Nov. 22) against Jackson State at 6 p.m.
Nicholls lit up the scoreboard with 12 3-pointers in the victory, highlighted by Morrison's 5-of-9 showing from long range. Freshman
Tykeria Williams (14 points) was 4-of-7 from downtown and
Emani White added two (8 points). Also reaching double figures in scoring were
Hope Pawlowski (16) and
Cassidy Barrios (12).
The game was close in the first half, with the Colonels outscoring ULM by three points in each period for a 35-29 lead at the break. Nicholls led by as much as 11 in the second quarter, with the first coming on a 3-ball by Morrison, before ULM chipped away at the deficit.
In the third, the Colonels outscored the Warhawks, 21-11, helped by a 15-4 run. The Red and Gray made three 3-pointers during the run, getting one each from Morrison, Williams and Pawlowski.
ULM was able to trim the deficit to 10 in the fourth, but never closed it to single digits.
Nicholls shot 41 percent from the field and had 18 assists on 29 made baskets. Pawlowski had five helpers while Barrios added four.
On defense, the Colonels racked up 15 steals off of 28 ULM turnovers, led by Pawlowski's five. Nicholls outscored ULM in points off of turnovers, 28-7.
The Warhawks were led by a game-high 31 points from Gabriella Cortez off the bench.
