LUBBOCK, Texas – The Nicholls State University men's basketball team received a career-high 18 points from junior
Jahvaughn Powell, but Texas Tech dominated every facet of the game en route to a 89-46 victory Wednesday night at United Supermarkets Arena.
Powell, in his first season with the Colonels (5-6), surpassed his previous best of 17 points on 7-of-15 shooting and 4-of-10 from 3-point range. He was the lone Colonel to reach double figures as Texas Tech (9-1) limited Nicholls' top two scorers,
DeAndre Harris and
Ja'Dante' Frye, to a combined 15 points on 5-of-23 from the field. As a team, the Colonels shot just 33 percent and had 19 turnovers.
The Red Raiders, winners of six straight, shot 53 percent and hammered the Colonels on the glass with a 46-18 advantage. The significant rebounding margin led to an 18-0 edge in second chance points. Justin Gray finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds for Texas Tech, while Zach Smith and Niem Stevenson added 13 points apiece.
Nicholls led twice in the first few minutes, with its last coming on a Frye 3-pointer that made the score 5-4. A 14-0 run put Texas Tech up by double figures and they never looked back as the Red Raiders built a 45-23 halftime lead.
The second half was much of the same with Texas Tech outscoring Nicholls, 44-23. The Colonels made five triples after the break, but connected on only 30 percent from the field.
The Colonels will return to Stopher Gym to host Mobile at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 18. For tickets, please call 985-448-4790 or log on to geauxcolonels.com.
