Colonels come up short at Jacksonville State, 75-52

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – A pair of 16-point performances by Emani White and Cassidy Barrios was not enough for the Nicholls State University women's basketball team as the Colonels fell, 75-52, at Jacksonville State Sunday afternoon.

The loss dropped the Colonels to 3-7 on the season while Jacksonville State improved to 7-3. The Gamecocks also stayed undefeated in the brief all-time series, winning both matchups over the past two seasons.

For the second time in as many road games, the Colonels struggled from the field, making less than 30 percent of their shots. Nicholls finished at 29 percent (17-of-59) while JSU shot 45 percent and hit 12 3-pointers.

Both White and Barrios put up 16 shots, with Barrios connecting on six and White made five. White accounted for two of the Colonels' five 3-pointers, but the team made just 5-of-20 for the game.

Nicholls had a strong first quarter, using a 6-for-6 showing at the free throw line to trail 19-17. But in the second quarter after the Colonels tied the game at 21 on a bucket by Barrios, the offense was held without a point for over six minutes as JSU went on a 12-0 run. The lead stayed at 12 at the break at 37-25.

In the third, Barrios went off for nine points to help Nicholls trim the deficit to seven on two different occasions, but the Gamecocks once again went on a huge run. JSU doubled its lead at 51-37 over a two-minute span and ended the quarter with a 57-40 advantage.

JSU's lead grew to as much as 25 in the fourth before handing the Colonels their fifth loss on the road.

The Colonels were unable to force turnovers, recording only five steals on 12 miscues. Barrios finished a rebound shy of a double-double, but Nicholls was outrebounded for the game, 47-31.

Briana Benson led all scorers with 22 points for the Gamecocks. She made 6-of-7 from behind the arc.

Nicholls will wrap up its nonconference slate on Wednesday, Dec. 21 at Memphis. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
