THIBODAUX, La. – After having no midweek game for the first time since the New Year, the rested Nicholls State University women's basketball team will look to continue its strong road play in conference as the Colonels take on rival Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday at the University Center at 1 p.m.
Nicholls (8-13, 6-5 SLC) evened its conference home record at 3-3 after its dramatic come-from-behind victory over McNeese State last Saturday. The win was also a milestone for eighth-year head coach
DoBee Plaisance as it put her in the record books as the program's all-time leader in wins at 90. Two more victories on the year would extend Plaisance's streak of double digit victories to five seasons.
Despite being outperformed in almost every category in five Southland road games, the Colonels have found a way to come out on top as they are 3-2. LiAnn McCarthly leads four players who are averaging double figures in the five contests, averaging 15.4 points. For the season, McCarthy is at 13.3 ppg and 17.5 in league play.
The Colonels finished with 15 assists in the win over McNeese, improving their record to 6-2 when tallying 14 or more. In Nicholls' eight victories, freshman
Cassidy Barrios has 28 assists versus just nine turnovers. Barrios, who scored 24 points against the Cowgirls, is second on the team in scoring at 11.0 ppg, and averages 5.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.8 steals.
Historically, Southeastern Louisiana (3-19, 2-9 SLC) has dominated the all-time series against the Colonels with a 56-19 advantage, but Nicholls has won the last three matchups. The Lady Lions head into Saturday's game with a seven-game losing skid, including their last two contests at home.
Southeastern is being outscored by an average of 18.5 points this season (63.5-82.0) and is led in offense by three players scoring in double figures. Nanna Pool leads the way with 14.3 points and 8.0 rebounds, while Taylin Underwood is at 13.5 points and KaeLynn Boyd averages 12.5.
Following Saturday's matchup, the Colonels will head to Northwestern State for a rematch against the Lady Demons on Wednesday, Feb. 17. Nicholls took the previous matchup in Thibodaux, 70-61, on Jan. 20.
