THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team, known for its stout pitching and sound defense, put together an offensive clinic on Saturday, scoring 33 runs en route to a doubleheader sweep over Mississippi Valley State at The Did.
Kyle Reese backed up his 4-for-4 day at the plate on Friday with another outstanding offensive performance on Saturday. Through the first three games of the 2016 season, Reese is 10-for-11 with nine RBIs, five runs, a triple, a double and a stolen base.
GAME 1: The Colonels (3-0) scored five runs in the first inning, before adding a run in the second and three more in the third, to take a commanding 9-0 lead.
After a pair of Nicholls runs in the fifth, the Devils (0-3) erased the shutout with a run in the sixth.
The Colonels quickly responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame, before putting up a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth.
MVSU notched back-to-back singles and scored a run in the ninth, but Nicholls closed out the game.
Reese was perfect for a second straight game, batting 4-for-4, with four RBIs and a run scored. Not to be outdone,
Ethan Valdez went 5-for-6, with six runs and an RBI.
Gavin Wehby hit 2-for-3, with two runs and two RBIs.
Joey Morales went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while
Devin Morrill had a two-run double in his only at bat.
Dylan Manichia finished 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
Drew Wheeler led the Devils with a 2-for-4 game and an RBI. Caleb Lindsey went 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
Cole Stapler (1-0) earned the win, tossing six strikeouts and allowing just one run on three hits through six innings of work. In relief,
Hunter Speer fanned two batters, while allowing a run on two hits through three innings.
Alex Bravo (0-1) took the loss, giving up nine runs on 11 hits in three innings.
GAME 2: Nicholls opened its second game on Saturday the same way it started the first, scoring five runs to secure to an early lead.
The Colonels added a run in the third and another in the fourth, before the MVSU got on the board with a fifth-inning run.
Nicholls answered with a six-run sixth inning, and added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth, before closing out the ballgame.
Reese led the way again with four RBIs and two runs on a 2-for-3 outing. Reese's lone groundout snapped a streak of nine consecutive hits to open the year. Valdez continued his hot offensive play with a 3-for-6 performance, two runs and an RBI.
Justin Holt finished 2-for-4, notching three RBIs and scoring once. Morales,
Alex Shermer and
Juan Givan combined for six runs and three RBIs in the victory.
Frederick Spencer II had the only RBI for the Devils in the contest, while Quitman Smith scored MVSU's run.
Jake Smith (1-0) picked up the win, tossing six strikeouts and allowing one unearned run on three hits through five innings on the mound. In relief,
Mike Hanchar fanned two batters through two scoreless innings of work.
Adam Tarver and
Zach Thiac combined for three strikeouts through the final two hitless innings.
The Colonels and Devils will face off in the series finale at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
