THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team was outhit by Tulane on Tuesday night, but a pair of timely seventh-inning runs lifted the Colonels to a 2-1 victory in front of a rowdy crowd at Ray E. Didier Field.
Nicholls (8-9, 1-2 SLC) earned its first win over the Green Wave (11-6) since April 2, 2013, snapping a five-game skid against Tulane.
Trailing, 1-0, in the bottom of the seventh,
Alex Tucker laid down sacrifice a bunt that brought
Devin Morrill home.
Justin Holt advanced to third on the play, before making the alert decision to take an extra base on the throw. Caught off guard, the Green Wave were unable to make a play at home before Holt slid in for the go-ahead run.
After six innings of strong pitching and defensive play, Richard Carthon singled to left field in the seventh, before a Jarrett DeHart double off the right field wall put Tulane ahead.
The Colonels escaped a pair of bases-loaded jams in the fifth and sixth innings. With the bases full and two outs in the fifth, DeHart blasted a shot deep into left field, but
Gavin Wehby made a catch at the warning track to close out the frame. An inning later the Green Wave loaded the bases with no outs, but Nicholls turned an unconventional 1-2-3 double play, before earning a ground out to escape unscathed.
Righty
Daniel Goff was outstanding in his first start for the Colonels, recording three strikeouts and allowing only three hits through five scoreless innings of work. In relief,

Hunter Speer had another strong performance, striking out one batter through a hitless inning of work.

Kyle Knauth each hit 1-for-3 in the victory.
Carthon paced Tulane with a 3-for-4 night and a run scored. DeHart recorded the Green Wave's lone RBI.
The Colonels host the Jaguars at 6 p.m. on Wednesday before heading to the Lone Star State for a three-game league series against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday.
