THIBODAUX, La. – Sam Houston exploded for 12 runs over the first six innings on Good Friday and held off a late push by the Nicholls State University baseball team to escape with a 12-8 victory at Ray E. Didier Field.
A three-run shot in the first inning and a grand slam in the fifth accounted for seven of the Bearkats (11-12, 5-3 SLC) runs on the night.
The Colonels (10-13, 2-6 SLC) trailed, 12-3, heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, but scored three runs in the frame to cut the lead in half. Nicholls added a run in the seventh and another in the eighth to maintain momentum heading into the final inning.
Despite the valiant comeback, the Colonels took back-to-back called third strikes in the ninth, and a fly out ended the game.
Joey Morales led Nicholls offensively with a 2-for-5 night, three runs and an RBI.
Dylan Manichia went 2-for-5 with three RBIs, while
Alex Shermer finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
Kyle Knauth had another solid offensive outing, batting 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
Andrew Fregia paced Sam Houston with four RBIs and two runs scored.
Daniel Goff (0-1) took the loss, surrendering six runs (three earned) on two hits through 1 1/3 innings.
Heath Donica (3-2) picked up the win, allowing six runs (four earned) on ten hits through five innings.

The Colonels will host Louisiana-Lafayette at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 29 live on Cox Sports Television. Nicholls will then travel to Biloxi, Miss. for a neutral site matchup against South Alabama at 7 p.m. on March 30.
