Nicholls Evens League-Opening Series With Win Over ACU

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team used a 13-hit night to pick up a 4-2 victory over Abilene Christian on Saturday at The Did. The win snap a seven-game skid for the Dirty Red and evened their Southland Conference-opening series at one win apiece.

Heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Colonels (5-7, 1-1 SLC) were locked in a 2-2 tie with the Wildcats (7-4, 1-1 SLC), but Joey Morales doubled to left center and Alex Tucker singled up the middle to score a pair of runs and lift Nicholls to victory.

A Morales sac fly in the second inning sent Gavin Wehby home, giving the Colonels an early 1-0 advantage. Nicholls doubled its lead in the sixth when a Wehby single to left center scored Alex Shermer.

Abilene Christian used four consecutive singles in the eighth to score a pair of runs and tie the ballgame, but the Colonels immediately answered in the bottom of the inning.

Wehby and Morales each finished with perfect hitting nights. Wehby went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Morales hit 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run. Dylan Manichia contributed a 2-for-4 night.

Austin Call led the Wildcats offensively with a 1-for-1 outing and a run scored.

Cole Stapler (2-1) earned the win with a dominant performance on the mound. Stapler allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits, while striking out six batters through 7 2/3 innings of work. Zach Thiac helped the Colonels out of a jam in the seventh, striking out the only batter he faced. Daniel Goff tossed the final scoreless frame and picked up the first save of his Nicholls career.

Nate Cole (2-0) took the loss, surrendering two runs on three hits, through one inning on the mound.
