LINCOLN, Nebr. – The Nicholls State University baseball team held Nebraska to just one run over the first four innings on Friday night, but the Cornhuskers used a five-run fifth to blow open the game and cruised to a 6-1 victory over the Colonels at Haymarket Park.
Holding a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth, Nebraska (24-14, 7-5 Big Ten) loaded the bases with no outs. After a pair of pop outs on the next two at bats, Nicholls (16-23, 7-11 SLC) looked like it might escape the inning unscathed. The following batter, Ben Miller, fired a shot to shallow left field that looked like it would end the inning, but a delayed read by the Colonel outfielder allowed the ball to drop in for a single and two runs to score. The next batter, Scott Schreiber, homered to left center, clearing the bases and putting the Cornhuskers up, 6-0.
Kyle Knauth launched his first career home run in the seventh inning, but Nicholls was unable to climb its way back into the contest.
Knauth led the Colonels with a 2-for-4 outing, an RBI and a run scored.
Justin Holt hit 2-for-3, while
Alex Tucker went 1-for-2.
Kyle Reese and
Trevor Flynn each finished 1-for-3 on the night.
Schreiber paced Nebraska with a 1-for-4 performance, three RBIs and a run.
Justin Sinibaldi (4-4) took the loss, allowing six runs on eight hits with a two strikeouts through six innings on the mound.
Zach Thiac allowed just two hits through a pair of scoreless innings of relief.
Derek Burkamper (4-1) picked up the win, holding Nicholls to just one run on seven hits while fanning four batters through eight innings of work.
