Colonels Drop Series Finale at Nebraska, 4-2

LINCOLN, Nebr. – The Nicholls State University baseball team fought through a four-inning pitching duel against Nebraska on Sunday afternoon and made a strong push late, but a pair of home runs gave the Cornhuskers a 4-0 lead after six and Nebraska held on for a 4-2 victory at Haymarket Park.

The Colonels (17-24, 7-11 SLC) put together a two-out rally in the eighth and it looked like they might have a miracle comeback in the works. Kyle Reese drew a leadoff walk, before Ethan Valdez was hit by a pitch. The Cornhuskers (25-15, 7-5 Big Ten) forced consecutive fly outs before Justin Holt notched a single that scored Reese and advanced Valdez to second. Joey Morales followed with a single up the middle that sent Valdez home. Nicholls loaded the bases after Kyle Knauth drew a walk, but Nebraska forced a ground out to stop the bleeding.

Lefty Alex Ernestine allowed only one hit by the Cornhuskers through the first four innings, but a solo home run in the fifth put the Colonels in a 1-0 hole.

An inning later Nebraska caught fire. The Cornhuskers opened the frame with a pair of singles, before pitcher Jake Meyers crushed a three-run blast over the left field wall. Nicholls surrendered another single and a walk before being forced to make a pitching change to escape the inning.

Morales paced the Colonel offense with a 2-for-4 outing and an RBI. Valdez finished 1-for-3 with a run, while Holt hit 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Meyers did all his damage on one hit, but led Nebraska offensively with a three-run home run.

Ernestine (2-3) took the loss, giving up four runs on six hits with a strikeout through 5 2/3 innings on the mound. Daniel Goff and Mike Hanchar combined to hold the Cornhuskers hitless over 2 1/3 innings.

Meyers (2-1) picked up the win, allowing just four hits through seven scoreless innings. Chad Luensmann earned his eighth save of the year, fanning two batters in the final hitless frame.

The Colonels return home for a three-game Southland Conference series against McNeese State, beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 29. Nicholls will then head to Texas for a three-game league series at Houston Baptist, beginning May 6.
