THIBODAUX, La. – Friday the 13
th was anything but lucky for the Nicholls State University baseball team as the squad dropped a 13-4 decision to Northwestern State at Ray E. Didier Field.
The Demons (28-21, 15-10 SLC) scored four runs in the first inning, four more in the second and one in the third to take a commanding 9-0 lead out of the gate.
Gavin Wehby put the Colonels (22-28, 11-14 SLC) on the board in the fourth inning with his first career home run.
Northwestern State padded its advantage with four additional runs in the eighth.
Nicholls answered with three runs over the final two innings, but the game was long out of reach.
Ross McWhorter led the Colonels offensively, batting 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run. Wehby finished 1-for-3, while
Kyle Reese hit 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run.
Cort Brinson paced the Demon offense with a 3-for-5 night, four RBIs and two runs.
Justin Sinibaldi (5-6) took the loss, surrendering eight runs (six earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts through 1 1/3 innings.
Adam Oller (7-0) picked up the win, allowing just one run on two hits, while fanning three batters though seven innings on the mound.
The teams will meet for game two at 6 p.m. on Saturday. First pitch for the series finale is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Following this weekend's action the Colonels will face Tulane at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the Big Easy. Nicholls will then battle New Orleans in an away-home-away series set to begin at 6 p.m. on Friday.
